This photostat copy was made from the original owned by Leigh M. Richey. Covering eleven pages, James Richey's autobiography recounts his conversion to Mormonism and the movement of his family to Nauvoo, Illinois, and Salt Lake City, Utah. The next six pages are written by James' eldest son, James Moroni Richey, and fills in the remaining portion of his father's life, including his participation in settling Sanpete Valley, Utah, his plural marriages, and his life in Saint Johns, Arizona. Following this, James Richey begins writing again. He starts with his vision of the end times, then continues with recollections of addresses Joseph Smith (1805-1844) gave to the Nauvoo Legion, a genealogy of his family, poems, songs, and patriarchal blessings. This item covers the time period from 1849 to 1903.

James Richey was born in 1821 in Pickens, Alabama, the son of William Richey and Margaret Ann Adair. In 1843 or 1844, James first heard the Mormon doctrine preached and was convinced of its truth after doing some research on his own. He was baptized into the church in 1844 and was later ordained a member of the Seventy and made a Patriarch.
